David Villa spoke of the huge pressure his team are under yesterday, and claimed the grandeur of Barça and it’s fans obliges them to win every game they play.
The ex-Valencia striker was speaking following his side’s 4-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano and gave an insight into what it is like to play at the famous club: “There is an importance placed on every game here that is true. The history and past achievements mean we have to play every game at out best.
“We are expected to go out and win every game, no matter who it is against.”
Barça have been in imperious form at the Camp Nou this season but have struggled with inconsistency on the road – last weekend’s defeat at Getafe saw them slip six points behind their bitter rivals Real Madrid, who they face next week at the Bernabeu.
Villa believes his side will go to the capital full of confidence however, and says they want to take maximum points from Jose Mourinho’s side: “Whoever we play, we plan the same. We go out to win and that will be the same against Madrid.
“We will go to the Bernabeu to beat them as always, maybe its a little different than in recent seasons as we are behind them in the league, but we will still have the same gameplan. We want to win.”
Barça must first overcome this season’s surprise package Levante, who they welcome to the Camp Nou on Saturday night, and el guaje says his team will be focused: “We have another game before we go to Madrid, and Levante have shown they are a good side this season. It will be a tough game but we will have 100% focus and play our hardest.”
Villa has notched a modest five league goals so far this season, leading to criticism from some quarters of the Spanish press, but the player says he is happy with the way he is performing: “Everybody is happy. The coach is happy, my teammates are happy and my family is happy – I don’t need to know about anybody else.
“My all-round game has improved since I arrived here and I am a better player now.”
Barcelona fans will no doubt be hoping the Spanish international is at the top of his game when their team go into next weeks highly anticipated clásico, and Villa reassured them by saying they would not let them down.
“After all, wearing this shirt means we have a duty to win.”
