OUR CONCLUSION
Faced with these somewhat sobering stories, it is hard not to question the benefits of this strategy for all parties.
There has yet to be an instance of it paying dividends in the shape of a regular first teamer, with recent Spanish loanees Rui Fonte and Havard Nordtveit both going on to prosper elsewhere – Fonte of course has ultimately stayed in Spain with Espanyol.
In theory the lack of a language barrier should aid the acclimatisation to a life in Europe, but the reality seems to be that the players feel cast adrift by the club who initially made all the effort to sign them.
When one adds to that the struggle at times to cope with being used irregularly by the Spanish clubs, who are understandably not prepared to guarantee them a first team place, there remain real doubts as to the scheme’s viability.
Let us hope for all parties concerned that Galindo and Wellington are able to silence the doubters in the years ahead.
