BIRMINGHAM CITY STAR LINKED WITH MOVE BACK TO LA LIGA
- Updated: 25 January, 2012
Birmingham City striker Nikola Zigic could be making a sensational return to La Liga.
The giant Serbian is currently with the Championship club following the Blues’ relegation last season and is one of the highest earners at St Andrews – a situation they can’t afford to prolong.
With Espanyol looking to secure the signing of a striker, Zigic has become available to take on a 6 month loan deal according to Catalan newspaper Sport.
Espanyol’s search for a striker dates back to the summer when Pablo Osvaldo was sold, but with Jesus Datolo moving to Brazil with Internacional, more funds have become available for Mauricio Pochettino.
Zigic has previously had success in La Liga, proving to be a big hit with Racing Santander in two stints at El Sardinero – in the second, a loan spell from Valencia, Zigic scored 13 goals in juts 19 games before being sold to Birmingham. An audacious bid by Racing was made to bring Zigic back last January, but to no evail.
After the embarrassing defeat to Mirandes last night, Espanyol have to bring in more firepower and Birmingham’s Zigic would provide that, although talks continue to rumble on between Ajax striker Mounir El Hamdaoui and club officials.
