What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago Real Madrid held a 10 point lead over bitter rivals Barcelona and the title race in Spain was looking all but over.
However, after dropping four points in the space of four days, Jose Mourinho has seen his side’s advantage cut to six points. Still a sizeable lead of course, but things are looking a whole lot more interesting at the summit of Spain’s top flight.
It’s been a busy week of games in la liga and there’s been plenty to talk about; Lionel Messi broke Barcelona’s all-time goalscoring record as his hat-trick saw off a plucky comeback from unfancied Granada, bottom-side Real Zaragoza heaped the pressure on under-fire Unai Emery by beating Valencia 2-1 at the Mestalla and Mallorca edged a five-goal thriller in Gijon.
That’s not to mention the extraordinary scenes at el Madrigal last night when Sergio Ramos and Mesut Ozil were sent off as Villarreal grabbed a draw against Real Madrid, who also had the coach and assistant sent to the stands. Mayhem indeed.
Elsewhere Atletico Madrid saw off Athletic Club in the battle of the European hopefuls at the Vicente Calderon and this season’s surprise package, Levante got yet another win – keeping them firmly on course to defy the odds and grab a place in continental competition next season.
Remember there’s also three more games to be played tonight!
BARCELONA 5-3 GRANADA
OSASUNA 0-0 GETAFE
SPORTING 2-3 MALLORCA
ATLETICO MADRID 2-1 ATHLETIC CLUB
VALENCIA 1-2 REAL ZARAGOZA
VILLARRAL 1-1 REAL MADRID
REAL SOCIEDAD 1-3 LEVANTE
