Liverpool set to battle Man United for La Liga midfield star
- Updated: 26 March, 2012
Liverpool could be ready to battle Manchester United for the signature of Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez, after British newspaper The Metro linked the Merseyside club with the player.
Kenny Dalglish was reported to be keen on bringing the Athletic Club star to Anfield by The Mirror last month but Manchester United have since been heavily linked to the player after the 23-year-old impressed during the Europa League games at Old Trafford and San Mames.
However The Metro today claim Liverpool are again showing interest in Martinez, although they are unwilling to meet the £34 million Athletic want for the player.
United have made no secret of their admiration for the Spanish international and Sir Alex Ferguson heaped praise on the player during the post Europa League match press conference at Old Trafford
Premier League leaders Manchester City have also been linked with Martinez and Spanish daily Marca claim Real Madrid are also keen.
Liverpool will face huge competition in any effort to bring Martinez to Anfield and the fact the Dalglish’s side cannot offer Champions League football may make a move to Old Trafford a more appealing prospect for the player.
