Saturday saw Lionel Messi close to within four goals of Barcelona’s all-time scoring record of 235, currently held by César Rodríguez, after the mercurial Argentine hit his side’s second goal in a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
Elsewhere, Granada secured a valuable 2-1 win against struggling Sporting at Los Cármenes to move up to 14th in the table while bottom side Real Zaragoza took the lead then dramatically conceded in the final five minutes of their tie against Osasuna, leaving them still eight points from safety.
In Madrid, a Iñigo Martínez own-goal allowed Getafe to leapfrog Real Sociedad in the table after a tight 1-0 victory over the Basque side for Luis García Plaza’s men.
In the day’s final game, Rayo Vallecano bounced back from last week’s heavy loss at Espanyol to record a comfortable 3-0 victory over the inconsistent Real Betis.
GRANADA 2-1 SPORTING
REAL ZARAGOZA 1-1 OSASUNA
GETAFE 1-0 REAL SOCIEDAD
