Beginning his career as a 15 year-old at local club Victoria Club de Futbol, Amancio Amaro joined Deportivo de La Coruña in the 1958-59 season helping them to promotion to the Primera Liga in 1962 and in doing so attracting the attention of many of Spain’s top clubs.

Madrid were initially put off by Amancio’s wage demands but at Don Santiago’s insistence the player eventually signed for the whites in June of that year scoring in his league debut, a 5-2 away win over Real Betis.

Despite joining during what was perceived as a transitional period for the side, Amancio experienced immediate success on arrival in the capital winning a league title at the first attempt. He established himself as a key player for Madrid’s Ye-Ye side, named after four of the players posed for Diario Marca wearing Beatles wigs.

In the 1966 European Cup final “the Wizard” scored a wonderful goal as Real came from behind to beat FK Partizan and secure a first European triumph for the Ye-Yes, exorcising the demons of their defeat to Inter Milan in the 1964 final.

In total Amancio won nine Primera Liga winner’s medals and represented Spain on 42 occasions scoring 11 goals in the process and lifting the European Cup in 1964.
