5 – MANOLO SANCHÍS

After excelling in the Spanish under-21’s side that triumphed at the 1986 European Championships, Manolo Sanchís made his league debut later that year at just 18 years of age on December 4th 1983. He scored the only goal in an away win over Real Murcia and finished his first season with 17 appearances to his name.

Second in Madrid’s all time appearances charts, Sanchís made a grand total of 711 appearances in the first team.

The sweeper was a second-generation star for los Blancos, his father Manuel Sanchís Martínez had represented the side throughout the 1960’s.

Part of the famous Quinta del Buitre side of the 1980’s Sanchís played his entire career at Real spanning from the mid 80’s until his final appearance in 2001 at the age of 36.

Sanchis won eight league titles including five in a row alongside Butragueño et al between 1986 and 1990 and he also won two Spanish Cups, two UEFA Cups and lifted the Champions League in 1998 and 2000 coming on as a late substitute in the latter, marking a fitting end to a glittering career.
