In October 1994 Raúl González Blanco made his debut in an away league tie with Real Zaragoza. He came on to replace outgoing star Emilio Butragueño in the side at the age of just 17 years and 124 days in what was considered as a highly symbolic passing of the torch.

He quickly established himself in the first team, effectively ending Butragueño’s Madrid career and going on to score ten goals in his first season.

Raúl became known for his exceptional off the ball movement and lethal finishing as he made himself a legend as the club’s all time top scorer with 323 goals in his club record 741 appearances for the side. He remains the Champions League’s top goalscorer with 61 goals.

During his 16 seasons in the Spanish capital he won six league titles and three European Cups and he was nominated the Champions League’s top forward in three consecutive years. He also notched 44 goals for the Spanish national side in his 102 appearances.

Raúl’s final act in a Real Madrid shirt came in April 2010 when he scored the opening goal in a 2-1 victory over Real Zaragoza at La Romareda. He sustained an injury in the process which would prevent him from representing the side again. In a dénouement befitting his great career, this was where he had made his debut 16 years previously.

Sir Alex Ferguson has heralded the striker as “an iconic figure in European football”.
