Puskás was part of the Budapest Honvéd side that dominated the Hungarian league throughout the 1950’s but shortly after a European Cup match with Atlétic Bilbao in 1956 the Hungarian Revolution broke out and Puskas refused to return to Hungary.

A two-year UEFA ban would follow and by the time he joined Real Madrid, the star of the Mighty Magyars side that had strolled to success at the 1952 Olympics was already 31 years old.

One could have been mistaken for thinking Puskás’ best years were behind him but he would prove to be a key part of a Madrid side that won five successive league titles and three European Cups.

As well as picking up a host of individual awards and he remains the only player to score four goals in a European Cup final.

In his eight years with the side he scored an incredible 236 goals in 261 games and was the league’s top scorer four times. Puskás went on to take Spanish nationality representing Spain at the 1962 World Cup.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in history, in 2004 Puskás was the only member of Hungary’s golden generation named in Pelé’s FIFA top 100 list of greatest living players.
