There were some crucial wins for teams at the top and bottom of Liga Adelante at the weekend, as Spain’s second tier continued to provide some fantastic football with eight games remaining.
Deportivo maintained their relentlesss march back to the Primera Division as they beat a stubborn Elche side 4-3 to secure their 14th victory in 16 games. Juan Carlos Valeron put the hosts in front after just five minutes before Angel levelled five minutes later. Despite a number of chances for both sides, the scores remained level until the 55th minute when Bruno Gama restored the advantage for Depor. That lead lasted less than two minutes however, as Angel bagged his second of the game to again bring Elche back on level terms.
The home side went back in front thanks to another goal from Bruno Gama in the 68th minute, only for Elche to again draw level moments later – this time through through Edu. With minutes remaining, Colotto finally won the game for Depor – sending them 13 points clear of third-placed Celta in the race for promotion.
Celta suffered a major setback in their hopes of securing automatic passage to the top flight, after they lost 1-0 to fellow challengers Hércules at the estadio Jose Rico Perez. Michel’s 77th minute strike was enough to separate the teams, with Celta now having won just once in six games.
Valladolid continue to capitalise on Celta’s recent poor form, and are now five points above the Galicians after a 1-0 victory at Villarreal B. Javi Guerra’s goal just before the break was enough for the away side to record their fifth consecutive triumph as they look for a return back to the Primera Division after a two-year absence.
Fifth-place Alcorcón also won on a good day for most of the top six, with their 2-0 victory over Córdoba moving them five points clear of the Andalucians who began the day just one place below them. Almería jumped above Cordoba into sixth, after 1-1 draw with second-bottom Cartagena at El Almarjal.
At the foot of the table there were big wins for Girona and Alcoyano. The Catalans fought off a determined fightback from Sabadell to secure the points with 12 minutes remaining – Juvenal Edjogo getting the crucial goal. Alcoyano enjoyed a fine 3-1 win at Recreativo to give themselves an excellent chance of climbing out of the relegation zone they currently occupy. Strikes from Rojas, Gato and Paco Esteban gave the Valencian side a much-deserved victory, moving them to within five points of Guadalajara, Murcia and Huesca.
Murcia were the big losers just above the drop zone after they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Barcelona B. Both Huesca and Guadalajara secured maximum points at Nastic and Numancia respectively, moving them level on points with the Murcian side.
Elsewhere, Xerez beat Las Palmas 2-0 at Chapin, to move them into 13th and further away from the danger zone below them.
