New coach Javi Salamero enjoyed a dream start to his Girona career as the struggling Catalans gave their survival hopes a major boost by beating leaders Deportivo la Coruña 1-0 at Montilivi on Saturday
Jandro’s penalty on the stroke of half time was enough for the home side to sink Depor, who had Diego Colotto sent off for blocking Coro’s goal-bound effort with his hand.
It proved to be a good day for three of the four sides in the relegation zone, as only Cartegena failed to pick up at least a point on an afternoon that also saw Aycoyano triumph over Sabadell and a battling Nastic come from behind to salvage a draw against Barcelona B in Tarragona.
Cartagena now sit bottom of the table after losing 2-1 to local rivals Murcia, who had lost eight of their previous nine games going into Saturday’s encounter at the Nuevo Condomina. Cristian Garcia’s strike, 15 minutes from time, proving the difference for the home side.
Third-placed Valladolid closed the gap on the top two after a dramatic stoppage time goal from Oscar sunk Las Palmas 2-1 at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla, moving them six points clear of Almería who were held to a 1-1 home draw by Xerez.
Elsewhere, Huesca secured an impressive 2-1 win at Elche to lift themselves three points clear of the relegation zone while Alcorcón beat Guadalajara, who have now lost 10 from their last 14 games and look to be in free fall.
In Sunday’s games, Celta closed the gap on leaders Depor after beating Villarreal B 2-0 thanks to goals from Fabian Orellana and Iago Aspas. The victory ends a two-game winless run for Paco Herrera’s side and puts them another step closer to a place in the top flight for the first time since 2007.
In the day’s other game, Córdoba leapfrogged Hércules in the table after beating the side from Alicante 3-1 at the estadio Nuevo Arcangel. The home side now sit fourth in the table – three points clear of Alcorcón who sit just outside the play-off places. Hércules drop down to sixth.
