VILLARREAL v ATLETICO MADRID
Atletico secured their second Uefa Europa League title in three seasons after the beat Athletic Club 3-0 in Bucharest on Wednesday night, and Diego Simeone will be looking for his side to round off a perfect week by pipping Malaga to the final Champions League place at El Madrigal.
Villarreal however, will prove stiff opposition as they fight to avoid what would be a catastrophic relegation. The appointment of Miguel Angel Lotina may not have brought beautiful, flowing football; but it has proved effective as the yellow submarine have lost just twice in 10 games. Lotina’s side go into the game knowing a point will be enough to retain their top flight status as they have a better head-to-head over Granada should Rayo Vallecano win at Vallecas – although if Granada avoid defeat Villarreal would be safe whatever they do against Atleti.
Champions League qualification is out of Atleti’s hands and they must hope Sporting grab an unlikely victory against Malaga if they are to have any chance of grabbing fourth. They will be tired after Wednesday’s exertions however and they will come up against a determined home side looking to end the season on a positive note. Atleti will have to settle for another year in the Europa League.
Prediction: Villarreal 1-1 Atletico Madrid
