Man United face Madrid transfer tug of war
- Updated: 30 June, 2012
Manchester United are set to battle Real Madrid for Croatian midfield star Luka Modric according to reports from The Sun.
The report suggests United are keen on an all-cash deal to bring the Spurs player into Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad at Old Trafford, while the Spanish champions prefer a cash plus player arrangement.
It is believed Modric will submit a written transfer request to Spurs chiefs within the next seven days to spark a transfer tug-of-war between United and Jose Mourinho’s side that could see offers rise above £30million.
The Croatian international has so far been reluctant to put in a formal request after Tottenham told him they would hold him until his current contract expires in 2016, however the player’s agent has said discreet talks with Madrid have already taken place.
United boss Ferguson was linked with Modric by the Mail Online in January and is a known admirer of the 26-year-old playmaker who was part of the Slaven Bilic’s side that were eliminated from the group stage at Euro 2012 recently.
