Mourinho pens new Madrid deal to end speculation
- Updated: 22 May, 2012
Jose Mourinho has ended all speculation over his future by signing a new deal at Real Madrid which will see him remain at the Bernabeu until 2016.
With recent rumours suggesting the Portuguese coach may be tempted to quit his post at the end of the season, officials at the Spanish giants have moved quickly to ensure the title winning coach remains at the club for the next four years. An official club statement released on Tuesday read: “Real Madrid CF and Jose Mourinho have reached an agreement to extend the latter’s contract with the club until 30 June 2016”
Mourinho arrived at the Bernabeu on 31 May 2010 but faced criticism during his early time in Spain after a number of controversial incidents – not least an altercations with new Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova in the 2011 Spanish supercup. However, Mourinho went on to justify the confidence afforded him by President Florentino Perez as he guided the club to their first league title in four seasons, ending the recent domestic dominance enjoyed by their bitter rivals Barcelona.
The 49-year-old has won seven domestic league titles during a coaching carreer that has also seen him work at Porto, Chelsea and Inter, however Mourinho described Real Madrid’s success this season as his ‘toughest yet’.
