Manchester United have made Athletic Club forward Fernando Llorente a priority target according to reports from AS.
Sir Alex Ferguson was said to have been impress with the Spanish international after Athletic’s 3-2 Europa League victory Old Trafford in April, with the Manchester Evening News suggesting United could be set to fight it out with rivals City for his signature during the summer.
Reports from Spanish sports daily AS now claim United made an unsuccessful approach for Llorente last season and are still among a number of clubs eyeing the highly-rated 27-year-0ld Basque’s signature.
Pamplona-born Llorente has played over 230 games for Athletic and has netted 79 goals to make him one of the most sought-after forwards currently playing in La Liga.
Although capped 20 times by the national team, the 6’5″ striker was an unused squad member during Spain’s recent triumph at the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine – despite having an impressive club season which saw the San Mames outfit reach the finals of both the Europa League and Copa del Rey.
United meanwhile are currently preparing for the start of their pre-season tour which will see them visit South Africa, China and Norway before returning to Old Trafford for the start of the Premier League season in August.
